The Ministry of Petroleum Resources has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a foundational figure in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry whose impact continues to shape the sector.

In an official condolence message issued in Abuja on Monday, following Buhari’s passing at a clinic in London on Sunday, the Ministry expressed deep sorrow over his death.

The statement, signed by Christopher Ugwuegbulam, Head of the Press and Public Relations Unit on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, highlighted Buhari’s decades-long relationship with the petroleum sector.

Buhari’s involvement in the industry began nearly 50 years ago when he served as Federal Commissioner (now Minister) for Petroleum and Natural Resources from 1976 to 1978 under then Head of State, Olusegun Obasanjo. He was also the pioneer Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), now NNPC Limited.

“His commitment to clean, accountable governance in the petroleum industry remains a guiding light,” the Ministry stated, adding that the infrastructure and institutions established during his leadership laid the foundation for ongoing reforms.

As President from 2015 to 2023, Buhari once again held the petroleum portfolio and oversaw major sectoral reforms, most notably the signing of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), a landmark legislation aimed at increasing transparency, attracting investment, and boosting efficiency in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

“From foundational infrastructure to bold sectoral reforms, President Buhari’s legacy in the oil and gas sector is far-reaching,” the statement read.

The Ministry extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the government, and the people of Nigeria, offering prayers for divine comfort and eternal rest for the late statesman.
