The Senate has indicated plans to fast-track constitutional amendments aimed at establishing state police as part of efforts to tackle rising insecurity across the country.

Lawmakers say the proposal has gained renewed urgency following recent incidents of terrorism, kidnapping and violent crimes in several states.

Supporters of the initiative argue that state police will improve local intelligence gathering and enable quicker responses to security threats, while opponents have raised concerns about possible political misuse.

The move comes as the Presidency also disclosed that discussions on the framework for state police have reached an advanced stage, with legal and constitutional adjustments expected soon.
