Ebola response workers in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo have staged protests over unpaid allowances, demanding full payment for their services during the ongoing outbreak.

Health officials acknowledged challenges with payment processes, while the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is working with Congolese authorities to resolve delays and maintain the morale of frontline health workers.

The outbreak, declared nearly two months ago, has infected 1,759 people and caused 600 confirmed deaths, while the World Health Organization said transmission of the deadly Ebola strain is continuing.
