The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, says Lassa fever has become deadlier in 2026, with 221 deaths recorded and the case fatality rate rising to 24 per cent.

The agency’s latest situation report shows that 23 states across 111 local government areas have recorded confirmed cases, with Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo and Benue accounting for 85 per cent of infections.

The NCDC attributed the rising deaths to late presentation of cases, low public awareness, poor sanitation and other challenges, urging Nigerians to seek early medical attention and maintain preventive measures.
