Women leaders and political stakeholders have urged President Bola Tinubu to use his executive powers to remove barriers limiting women’s participation in elective politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

They also called for legislation to create special seats for women in parliament, stressing the need to move beyond encouraging women to contest to creating conditions for them to win.

Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said women currently occupy only four of 109 Senate seats and 17 of 360 House of Representatives seats, urging support for female candidates.
