Canada has announced counter-tariffs of up to 50 percent on a range of American goods in retaliation for the latest tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

The new measures, which will target about 28 billion Canadian dollars worth of US products, including steel, furniture, fresh tuna and cotton T-shirts, will take effect on September 8.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne described the action as a proportionate and strategic response, while announcing an additional 7.5 billion Canadian dollars in support for businesses and workers affected by the trade dispute.

The latest escalation follows the collapse of US-Canada trade talks last week, with both sides blaming each other for making unreasonable demands.
