The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed the Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2026, seeking to reduce maternal deaths, promote safe motherhood and protect reproductive health rights in line with legal indications.
The bill was passed during plenary presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide, following consideration and adoption of the Health Committee’s report.
The House subsequently directed that the bill be transmitted to Governor Dapo Abiodun for assent.
Four other bills also passed first reading, including legislation on gender balance in public offices, victims’ rights and human sacrifice.
The Assembly also resolved to convert former Deputy Speaker Dare Kadiri’s 2021 removal from office to a resignation, following his appeal for a dignified closure to the matter.
