The death toll from Saturday’s boat mishap on the Buruku River in Benue State has risen to four, including a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Moses Tsuagh.

Nine others remain missing.

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency said more than 200 people were believed to have been on board, while 38 motorcycles are still underwater.

The victims were reportedly returning from a burial ceremony in neighbouring Gboko Local Government Area.

The state government has suspended the Buruku crossing branch of the Nigeria Union of Maritime Workers and the affected boat operator.

It also ordered the arrest and detention of the boat skipper as search and rescue operations continue.
