The Senate has urged the Federal Government to release emergency funds from the Ecological Fund to tackle deadly gully erosion and landslides in Cross River South.

The move follows multiple deaths, destruction of homes and displacement of residents in affected communities.

The lawmakers said a landslide at Ikot Anwatim in July 2026 killed five people, including four siblings, while an eight-year-old girl also died in a separate incident at Edim Otop. Communities facing threats include Atakpa, Ikot Effangha Mkpa, Nyaghasang and Anansa.

The Senate also urged the Environment Ministry and emergency agencies to assess high-risk areas, begin protective works and provide shelter, food and medical support for displaced families.

Its Committee on Environment has been mandated to inspect affected communities and report on the necessary interventions.
