President Bola Tinubu has asked the House of Representatives to approve the issuance of promissory notes worth 269.45 billion naira to settle verified outstanding Federal Government debts owed to various creditors.

The request, contained in a letter dated August 18, 2026, was read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during plenary yesterday.

The government said the programme would provide a structured repayment mechanism while easing pressure on its cash flow. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said only verified and validated claims would qualify for settlement
