The Kogi and Jigawa State Houses of Assembly have unanimously approved the proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police in Nigeria, citing the need to strengthen community policing and tackle insecurity.
In Kogi, Speaker Aliyu Umar Yusuf said decentralised policing would improve intelligence gathering and responses to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other crimes while creating employment opportunities for young people.
Jigawa Speaker Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin said the move would strengthen security at state and local government levels.
The approvals follow the passage of the proposal by both chambers of the National Assembly.
