The Senate has stepped down the proposed Agricultural Revolution Bill, 2026, sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, following concerns over its drafting, scope and the failure to provide printed copies to lawmakers.
The bill, which seeks to modernise Nigeria’s agricultural sector, faced criticism from senators who argued that it was too broad and lacked clear provisions on existing agricultural institutions.
Senators Yahaya Abdullahi and Abdul Ningi called for further work on the legislation, despite supporting its objectives.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the sponsor to ensure that printed copies were circulated to all lawmakers, while the Senate Leader, Mohammed Monguno, defended the bill’s preparation.
The proposed legislation was stepped down to allow for improvements before its reintroduction
