The Senate has begun moves to address rising insecurity and criminal activities across Nigeria’s waterways, including sea robbery, illegal bunkering, oil theft and kidnapping.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Navy, Gbenga Daniel, led a joint sitting of three Senate committees, where lawmakers called for stronger inter-agency collaboration, modern surveillance technology and improved security operations.
Daniel stressed that military action alone cannot guarantee lasting security, urging government to address poverty, unemployment and poor infrastructure in riverine communities.
The committees are expected to develop recommendations for consideration by the National Assembly.
