Team Nigeria has unveiled a 96-athlete squad for the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place from July 16 to 20 at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The contingent includes 18 girls in the U18 category, 24 in the U20 women’s team, 30 athletes in the U20 men’s division, and 24 boys for the U18 events.
Supporting the team are 22 coaches, 8 medical staff, and 8 backroom officials, including physiotherapists, a psychologist, logistics personnel, and media handlers,tasked with ensuring optimal performance and organization.
As part of final preparations, Nigeria’s sprint relay team, Lucy Nwankwo, Success Oyibu, Anita Itohan, and Chika Bakwunye, fine-tuned their baton exchanges at the recent AFN/Dynamic Athletics Meet.
Officials say the athletes have undergone intensive training and performance evaluations ahead of the continental showdown, where over 40 African nations are expected to compete.
With high expectations on home soil, Nigeria is aiming for a dominant display to reinforce its status as a continental athletics powerhouse and inspire a new generation of track and field talent.
