The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 in London.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following President Bola Tinubu’s approval and in continuation of the seven-day national mourning period declared in Buhari’s honour.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, Tunji-Ojo described Buhari as a statesman who served Nigeria with “dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to national unity.”

The minister urged Nigerians to use the day to reflect on Buhari’s life and leadership by promoting values such as peace, patriotism, and unity, principles the late president was known to uphold.

As part of the mourning period, national flags across the country and missions abroad are to continue flying at half-mast until Saturday, July 19.

President Buhari’s death was confirmed by his former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Sunday evening. His remains are expected to arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday for burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

The Federal Government extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and  the entire nation.
