The Lagos State Government says it is targeting about 3.5 gigawatts of electricity supply to address persistent power shortages and attract private investment into the state’s electricity market.

At a high-level power town hall in Lagos, officials said the state currently receives less than one gigawatt from the national grid, despite the transmission system having the capacity to deliver about 3.5 gigawatts.

The Special Adviser to the President on Power, Rilwan Babalola, said Lagos plans to pilot a 500-megawatt Clean Lagos Electricity Market, which will aggregate demand, contract power suppliers and ensure transparent metering and payment.

The State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, also said Lagos is seeking an additional two gigawatts as an immediate step towards its 3.5-gigawatt target.
