Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has hosted members of the Super Falcons who hail from the state, commending them for their role in Nigeria’s triumphant outing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The reception took place at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge and was attended by six standout players from Imo: Chiamaka Nnadozie, Tochukwu Oluehi, Osinachi Ohale, Chinwe Ihezuo, Jennifer Echegini, and Anam Imo.
The Super Falcons made history once again after coming from two goals down to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in a dramatic final, earning Nigeria its tenth WAFCON title.
Speaking on his official X handle, Governor Uzodimma praised the players’ performance and resilience throughout the tournament.
“The steeze and composure displayed by the Super Falcons were unmatched,” he wrote. “Even in moments when the nation was filled with apprehension, they stood firm, never wavering in faith or focus.”
He described the victory as a moment of national pride and a reflection of the values that unite Nigerians.
“Their resilience and unity led to a well-deserved victory, bringing home the coveted trophy and filling every Nigerian heart with pride,” Uzodimma said. “Hosting the team at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge was a moment of profound joy.”
He also expressed special pride in the players from Imo State.
“It was particularly moving to witness the outstanding contributions of Imo State daughters, whose talent and dedication were on full display,” the governor noted. “Their performance was a true testament to the spirit and potential of our people.”
Uzodimma added that the team’s achievement went beyond sports.
“This victory is not just a win on the pitch. It is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when commitment, discipline, and national pride come together.”
Nigeria’s latest WAFCON title reinforces its dominance in African women’s football and adds to the Super Falcons’ legacy as the most successful women’s national team on the continent.
